Honestly, this is exactly what happens when you let things get too soft on crime and criminals start thinking they can do whatever they want. Ecuador needs to take the gloves off and actually crack down hard on these gangs—none of this “human rights” nonsense for people who are terrorizing civilians. If it takes the military in the streets and curfews, so be it. The only way to restore order is to show these thugs that the government is in charge, not them. All this worrying about how it looks for tourism is pointless if people are getting gunned down in bars. The state should have absolute authority when it comes to public safety, and if that means suspending a few freedoms temporarily, who cares? Protect the law-abiding citizens first, deal with the criminals mercilessly, and the rest will fall into place.

This is exactly what happens when you have open borders and weak governments that refuse to crack down hard on gangs and criminals—ordinary people end up paying the price.
